The Center for Research in Cognitive Science at the National Chung-Cheng University (NCCU) was founded in 1990. The main goal of the Cognitive Science Center is to bring together scholars and specialists with different intellectual backgrounds to initiate and participate in large-scale inter-disciplinary research projects in cognitive science. The academic departments at the NCCU that constitute the cognitive science community primarily includes Departments of Philosophy, Lingiustics, and Psychology. Research projects during the past decade have been conducted in the area of reading, the cognitive-neuropsychological study of the Chinese language, and verbal and spatial abilities of scientifically gifted middle school students, the mental-model approach to the construction of computer-assisted system of diagnosis and learning, eye movements and cognitive functions, among others.
In close collaboration with the Department of Psychology, the Center has jointly established the following research labs in the past few years:Speech Lab The Speech Lab was established in 1991 to conduct research in the following areas: language acoustics, phoneme awareness, the psychology of language use, and pathology in language use, etc.
Eye-Tracker Lab The Eye-Tracker Lab was established in 1996 to conduct research in areas of Chinese reading, spatial problem-solving, visual search and object recognition, facial emotional expressions, visual-auditory integration, and attentional movements in neglect patients, among others.
